As educators, the Community Awareness Committee under the direction of Lori Block sees the need of children in our community. Every year the committee on behalf of the AFT attempts to provide school bags and supplies to children in our community less fortunate. This year 300 backpacks and string bags are being distributed in southern New Jersey:
- 60 backpacks were ordered and delivered to Angel of God Foundation of Gloucester County for their Back to School program.
- 40 backpacks were ordered and delivered to the Salvation Army of Atlantic City’s Back to School and After School Program. (they promised us a pic when they distribute next week)
- 10 backpacks were delivered to The Center for Family Services of Camden County along with 20 tablets
- 102 drawstring bags were ordered and were delivered with 102 books to the Glassboro Headstart.
- 25 drawstring bags were ordered and are soon to be delivered by committee member Esther Mummert to the Salvation Army of Vineland’s After School Program. Esther will be “stuffing the school bags with school supplies she herself donated.
- 30 bags are on reserve for the homeless project to be spearheaded by committee member Patricia Quigley in the fall
- 33 bags are on reserve for a project for cancer patients for the spring
The Tri-County Headstart represented by Head Teacher Miss Nicki (pictured with Lori Block)was eager to receive AFT’s donations for her children at the school. Each child will receive their own bag with a new book to read to begin the school year!
